Hi, I’m Alia Parker, a writer and journalist who also dabbles in occasional copywriting to eke out a living.
I’m glad you found my Mind Flexing page. It’s a place where I come each week to exercise my wit since having found it was in want of exercising. Amid the clutter of ads and unsocial media, casino-style reels and clickbait headlines, I, like you perhaps, crave a space to think.
Prior to starting this stack, my thoughts were becoming increasingly frazzled. Between work calls and coffee on the run, changing nappies and toddler taming, I had lost the space I needed to be me; to write and dwell on thoughts. Carving out time to think and write, albeit often late at night, has become a mental tonic. This space allows you, my friends, to join me as we reach into the bag of life, pull out a topic and roll it through our fingers until we can feel all its bumps and creases.
I hope you enjoy the assortment of thought expeditions I present to you. The topics that pique my interest are often new to me and therefore, I’m happy to declare that I’m expert at nothing. You won’t find your guru here. Indeed, I’m just as interested in what you think about these things as I am in the sources of information I dig up. So make sure to jump in the comments and weigh in.
About me
The brief version is that I was once a reporter for Australian Associated Press and the Canadian newspaper National Post before taking time out to freelance while mountain biking unsupported from Canada to Mexico. I then cycled 10,000km around much of Australia. After moving to a house up a dirt track in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, I found a change of career necessary and took a job with the town’s local government marketing a snow village. It wasn’t long before an opportunity to manage a not-for-profit mountain bike park came my way, and well, that was a blast. But, with two young children since entering my life, it is the flexibility and enjoyment of writing I’ve returned to. Which brings us here.
